<\/a>But, wrangling pedant, this is
\n<\/a>The patroness of heavenly harmony:
\n<\/a>Then give me leave to have prerogative;
\n<\/a>And when in music we have spent an hour,
\n<\/a>Your lecture shall have leisure for as much.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Preposterous ass, that never read so far
\n<\/a>To know the cause why music was ordain’d!
\n<\/a>Was it not to refresh the mind of man
\n<\/a>After his studies or his usual pain?

\n<\/a>Than hath been taught by any of my trade:

\n<\/a>To change true rules for old inventions.

Enter BAPTISTA, GREMIO, TRANIO, KATHARINA, BIANCA, LUCENTIO, and others, attendants<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>[To TRANIO] Signior Lucentio, this is the
\n<\/a>‘pointed day.
\n<\/a>That Katharina and Petruchio should be married,
\n<\/a>And yet we hear not of our son-in-law.
\n<\/a>What will be said? what mockery will it be,
\n<\/a>To want the bridegroom when the priest attends
\n<\/a>To speak the ceremonial rites of marriage!
\n<\/a>What says Lucentio to this shame of ours?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>KATHARINA<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>No shame but mine: I must, forsooth, be forced
\n<\/a>To give my hand opposed against my heart
\n<\/a>Unto a mad-brain rudesby full of spleen;
\n<\/a>Who woo’d in haste and means to wed at leisure.
\n<\/a>I told you, I, he was a frantic fool,
\n<\/a>Hiding his bitter jests in blunt behavior:
\n<\/a>And, to be noted for a merry man,
\n<\/a>He’ll woo a thousand, ‘point the day of marriage,
\n<\/a>Make feasts, invite friends, and proclaim the banns;
\n<\/a>Yet never means to wed where he hath woo’d.
\n<\/a>Now must the world point at poor Katharina,
\n<\/a>And say, ‘Lo, there is mad Petruchio’s wife,

\n<\/a>of boots that have been candle-cases, one buckled,
\n<\/a>another laced, an old rusty sword ta’en out of the
\n<\/a>town-armory, with a broken hilt, and chapeless;
\n<\/a>with two broken points: his horse hipped with an
\n<\/a>old mothy saddle and stirrups of no kindred;
\n<\/a>besides, possessed with the glanders and like to mose
\n<\/a>in the chine; troubled with the lampass, infected
\n<\/a>with the fashions, full of wingdalls, sped with
\n<\/a>spavins, rayed with yellows, past cure of the fives,
\n<\/a>stark spoiled with the staggers, begnawn with the
\n<\/a>bots, swayed in the back and shoulder-shotten;
\n<\/a>near-legged before and with, a half-chequed bit
\n<\/a>and a head-stall of sheeps leather which, being
\n<\/a>restrained to keep him from stumbling, hath been
\n<\/a>often burst and now repaired with knots; one girth
\n<\/a>six time pieced and a woman’s crupper of velure,
\n<\/a>which hath two letters for her name fairly set down
\n<\/a>in studs, and here and there pieced with packthread.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>BAPTISTA<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Who comes with him?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>BIONDELLO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>O, sir, his lackey, for all the world caparisoned
\n<\/a>like the horse; with a linen stock on one leg and a
\n<\/a>kersey boot-hose on the other, gartered with a red
\n<\/a>and blue list; an old hat and ‘the humour of forty
\n<\/a>fancies’ pricked in’t for a feather: a monster, a
\n<\/a>very monster in apparel, and not like a Christian
\n<\/a>footboy or a gentleman’s lackey.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>‘Tis some odd humour pricks him to this fashion;
\n<\/a>Yet oftentimes he goes but mean-apparell’d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I am glad he’s come, howsoe’er he comes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>But to her love concerneth us to add
\n<\/a>Her father’s liking: which to bring to pass,
\n<\/a>As I before unparted to your worship,
\n<\/a>I am to get a man,–whate’er he be,
\n<\/a>It skills not much. we’ll fit him to our turn,–
\n<\/a>And he shall be Vincentio of Pisa;
\n<\/a>And make assurance here in Padua

\n<\/a>‘Twere good, methinks, to steal our marriage;

<\/a>That by degrees we mean to look into,
\n<\/a>And watch our vantage in this business:
\n<\/a>We’ll over-reach the greybeard, Gremio,
\n<\/a>The narrow-prying father, Minola,
\n<\/a>The quaint musician, amorous Licio;
\n<\/a>All for my master’s sake, Lucentio.
\nRe-enter GREMIO<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/a>Signior Gremio, came you from the church?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>As willingly as e’er I came from school.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>And is the bride and bridegroom coming home?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>A bridegroom say you? ’tis a groom indeed,
\n<\/a>A grumbling groom, and that the girl shall find.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Curster than she? why, ’tis impossible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>GREMIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Why he’s a devil, a devil, a very fiend.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Why, she’s a devil, a devil, the devil’s dam.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>GREMIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Tut, she’s a lamb, a dove, a fool to him!
\n<\/a>I’ll tell you, Sir Lucentio: when the priest
\n<\/a>Should ask, if Katharina should be his wife,
\n<\/a>‘Ay, by gogs-wouns,’ quoth he; and swore so loud,
\n<\/a>That, all-amazed, the priest let fall the book;
\n<\/a>And, as he stoop’d again to take it up,
\n<\/a>The mad-brain’d bridegroom took him such a cuff
\n<\/a>That down fell priest and book and book and priest:
\n<\/a>‘Now take them up,’ quoth he, ‘if any list.’<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>What said the wench when he rose again?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>GREMIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Trembled and shook; for why, he stamp’d and swore,
\n<\/a>As if the vicar meant to cozen him.
\n<\/a>But after many ceremonies done,
\n<\/a>He calls for wine: ‘A health!’ quoth he, as if
\n<\/a>He had been aboard, carousing to his mates
\n<\/a>After a storm; quaff’d off the muscadel
\n<\/a>And threw the sops all in the sexton’s face;
\n<\/a>Having no other reason
\n<\/a>But that his beard grew thin and hungerly
\n<\/a>And seem’d to ask him sops as he was drinking.
\n<\/a>This done, he took the bride about the neck
\n<\/a>And kiss’d her lips with such a clamorous smack
\n<\/a>That at the parting all the church did echo:
\n<\/a>And I seeing this came thence for very shame;
\n<\/a>And after me, I know, the rout is coming.
\n<\/a>Such a mad marriage never was before:
\n<\/a>Hark, hark! I hear the minstrels play.
