\n<\/a>To see fair Padua, nursery of arts,
\n<\/a>I am arrived for fruitful Lombardy,
\n<\/a>The pleasant garden of great Italy;
\n<\/a>And by my father’s love and leave am arm’d
\n<\/a>With his good will and thy good company,
\n<\/a>My trusty servant, well approved in all,
\n<\/a>Here let us breathe and haply institute
\n<\/a>A course of learning and ingenious studies.
\n<\/a>Pisa renown’d for grave citizens
\n<\/a>Gave me my being and my father first,
\n<\/a>A merchant of great traffic through the world,
\n<\/a>Vincetino come of Bentivolii.
\n<\/a>Vincetino’s son brought up in Florence
\n<\/a>It shall become to serve all hopes conceived,
\n<\/a>To deck his fortune with his virtuous deeds:
\n<\/a>And therefore, Tranio, for the time I study,
\n<\/a>Virtue and that part of philosophy
\n<\/a>Will I apply that treats of happiness
\n<\/a>By virtue specially to be achieved.

\n<\/a>And am to Padua come, as he that leaves
\n<\/a>A shallow plash to plunge him in the deep

<\/a>Mi perdonato, gentle master mine,

\n<\/a>This virtue and this moral discipline,
\n<\/a>Let’s be no stoics nor no stocks, I pray;
\n<\/a>Or so devote to Aristotle’s cheques
\n<\/a>As Ovid be an outcast quite abjured:
\n<\/a>Balk logic with acquaintance that you have
\n<\/a>And practise rhetoric in your common talk;
\n<\/a>Music and poesy use to quicken you;
\n<\/a>The mathematics and the metaphysics,
\n<\/a>Fall to them as you find your stomach serves you;

\n<\/a>Such friends as time in Padua shall beget.

<\/a>Gentlemen, importune me no farther,
\n<\/a>For how I firmly am resolved you know;
\n<\/a>That is, not bestow my youngest daughter

\n<\/a>Because I know you well and love you well,
\n<\/a>Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>[Aside] To cart her rather: she’s too rough for me.

<\/a>I pray you, sir, is it your will
\n<\/a>To make a stale of me amongst these mates?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>HORTENSIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Mates, maid! how mean you that? no mates for you,
\n<\/a>Unless you were of gentler, milder mould.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>KATHARINA<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>I’faith, sir, you shall never need to fear:
\n<\/a>I wis it is not half way to her heart;
\n<\/a>But if it were, doubt not her care should be
\n<\/a>To comb your noddle with a three-legg’d stool
\n<\/a>And paint your face and use you like a fool.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>HORTENSIA<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>From all such devils, good Lord deliver us!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Well said, master; mum! and gaze your fill.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Gentlemen, that I may soon make good
\n<\/a>What I have said, Bianca, get you in:
\n<\/a>And let it not displease thee, good Bianca,

\n<\/a>Signior Baptista, for this fiend of hell,

<\/a>Gentlemen, content ye; I am resolved:

<\/a>And for I know she taketh most delight

\n<\/a>Schoolmasters will I keep within my house,
\n<\/a>Fit to instruct her youth. If you, Hortensio,
\n<\/a>Or Signior Gremio, you, know any such,

<\/a>You may go to the devil’s dam: your gifts are so

\n<\/a>so great, Hortensio, but we may blow our nails
\n<\/a>together, and fast it fairly out: our cakes dough on
\n<\/a>both sides. Farewell: yet for the love I bear my
\n<\/a>sweet Bianca, if I can by any means light on a fit
\n<\/a>man to teach her that wherein she delights, I will
\n<\/a>wish him to her father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>So will I, Signior Gremio: but a word, I pray.
\n<\/a>Though the nature of our quarrel yet never brooked
\n<\/a>parle, know now, upon advice, it toucheth us both,
\n<\/a>that we may yet again have access to our fair
\n<\/a>mistress and be happy rivals in Bianco’s love, to
\n<\/a>labour and effect one thing specially.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>What’s that, I pray?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>HORTENSIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Marry, sir, to get a husband for her sister.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>A husband! a devil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I say, a devil. Thinkest thou, Hortensio, though
\n<\/a>her father be very rich, any man is so very a fool
\n<\/a>to be married to hell?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Tush, Gremio, though it pass your patience and mine
\n<\/a>to endure her loud alarums, why, man, there be good
\n<\/a>fellows in the world, an a man could light on them,
\n<\/a>would take her with all faults, and money enough.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>GREMIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>I cannot tell; but I had as lief take her dowry with
\n<\/a>this condition, to be whipped at the high cross
\n<\/a>every morning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>HORTENSIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Faith, as you say, there’s small choice in rotten
\n<\/a>apples. But come; since this bar in law makes us
\n<\/a>friends, it shall be so far forth friendly
\n<\/a>maintained all by helping Baptista’s eldest daughter
\n<\/a>to a husband we set his youngest free for a husband,
\n<\/a>and then have to’t a fresh. Sweet Bianca! Happy man
\n<\/a>be his dole! He that runs fastest gets the ring.
\n<\/a>How say you, Signior Gremio?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>GREMIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>I am agreed; and would I had given him the best
\n<\/a>horse in Padua to begin his wooing that would
\n<\/a>thoroughly woo her, wed her and bed her and rid the
\n<\/a>house of her! Come on.

\n<\/a>I never thought it possible or likely;
\n<\/a>But see, while idly I stood looking on,
\n<\/a>I found the effect of love in idleness:
\n<\/a>And now in plainness do confess to thee,
\n<\/a>That art to me as secret and as dear
\n<\/a>As Anna to the queen of Carthage was,
\n<\/a>Tranio, I burn, I pine, I perish, Tranio,
\n<\/a>If I achieve not this young modest girl.
\n<\/a>Counsel me, Tranio, for I know thou canst;
\n<\/a>Assist me, Tranio, for I know thou wilt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Master, it is no time to chide you now;
\n<\/a>Affection is not rated from the heart:

<\/a>Master, you look’d so longly on the maid,
\n<\/a>Perhaps you mark’d not what’s the pith of all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>LUCENTIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>O yes, I saw sweet beauty in her face,
\n<\/a>Such as the daughter of Agenor had,
\n<\/a>That made great Jove to humble him to her hand.
\n<\/a>When with his knees he kiss’d the Cretan strand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Saw you no more? mark’d you not how her sister
\n<\/a>Began to scold and raise up such a storm
\n<\/a>That mortal ears might hardly endure the din?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>LUCENTIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Tranio, I saw her coral lips to move
\n<\/a>And with her breath she did perfume the air:
\n<\/a>Sacred and sweet was all I saw in her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>TRANIO<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Nay, then, ’tis time to stir him from his trance.
\n<\/a>I pray, awake, sir: if you love the maid,
\n<\/a>Bend thoughts and wits to achieve her. Thus it stands:
\n<\/a>Her eldest sister is so curst and shrewd
\n<\/a>That till the father rid his hands of her,
\n<\/a>Master, your love must live a maid at home;
\n<\/a>And therefore has he closely mew’d her up,
\n<\/a>Because she will not be annoy’d with suitors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Ah, Tranio, what a cruel father’s he!
\n<\/a>But art thou not advised, he took some care

<\/a>Not possible; for who shall bear your part,
\n<\/a>And be in Padua here Vincentio’s son,
\n<\/a>Keep house and ply his book, welcome his friends,
\n<\/a>Visit his countrymen and banquet them?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Basta; content thee, for I have it full.
\n<\/a>We have not yet been seen in any house,

\n<\/a>Some Neapolitan, or meaner man of Pisa.

\n<\/a>Uncase thee; take my colour’d hat and cloak:
\n<\/a>When Biondello comes, he waits on thee;

\n<\/a>And I for my escape have put on his;
\n<\/a>For in a quarrel since I came ashore
\n<\/a>I kill’d a man and fear I was descried:

<\/a>A senseless villain! Good Hortensio,
\n<\/a>I bade the rascal knock upon your gate

<\/a>Knock at the gate! O heavens! Spake you not these
\n<\/a>words plain, ‘Sirrah, knock me here, rap me here,
