Dogberry. <\/strong>Is our whole dissembly appeared?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges.\u00a0<\/strong>O, a stool and a cushion for the sexton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton. <\/strong>Which be the malefactors?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Marry, that am I and my partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Nay, that’s certain; we have the exhibition to examine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton.\u00a0<\/strong>But which are the offenders that are to be\u00a0
examined? let them come before master constable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Yea, marry, let them come before me. What is your 
name, friend?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borachio. <\/strong>Borachio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Pray, write down, Borachio. Yours, sirrah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrade.\u00a0<\/strong>I am a gentleman, sir, and my name is Conrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Write down, master gentleman Conrade. Masters, do 
you serve God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrade. <\/strong>[with Borachio]<\/em> Yea, sir, we hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Write down, that they hope they serve God: and\u00a0
write God first; for God defend but God should go
before such villains! Masters, it is proved already\u00a0
that you are little better than false knaves; and it\u00a0
will go near to be thought so shortly. How answer\u00a0
you for yourselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrade.\u00a0<\/strong>Marry, sir, we say we are none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>A marvellous witty fellow, I assure you: but I 
will go about with him. Come you hither, sirrah; a 
word in your ear: sir, I say to you, it is thought 
you are false knaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borachio.\u00a0<\/strong>Sir, I say to you we are none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Well, stand aside. ‘Fore God, they are both in a 
tale. Have you writ down, that they are none?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton. <\/strong>Master constable, you go not the way to examine: 
you must call forth the watch that are their accusers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Yea, marry, that’s the eftest way. Let the watch
come forth. Masters, I charge you, in the prince’s\u00a0
name, accuse these men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Watchman. <\/strong>This man said, sir, that Don John, the prince’s 
brother, was a villain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Write down Prince John a villain. Why, this is flat
perjury, to call a prince’s brother villain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borachio. <\/strong>Master constable,\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Pray thee, fellow, peace: I do not like thy look, 
I promise thee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton.\u00a0<\/strong>What heard you him say else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Watchman. <\/strong>Marry, that he had received a thousand ducats of 
Don John for accusing the Lady Hero wrongfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Flat burglary as ever was committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Yea, by mass, that it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton.\u00a0<\/strong>What else, fellow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Watchman. <\/strong>And that Count Claudio did mean, upon his words, to 
disgrace Hero before the whole assembly. and not marry her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>O villain! thou wilt be condemned into everlasting 
redemption for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton.\u00a0<\/strong>What else?2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watchman. <\/strong>This is all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexton.\u00a0<\/strong>And this is more, masters, than you can deny.\u00a0
Prince John is this morning secretly stolen away;\u00a0
Hero was in this manner accused, in this very manner\u00a0
refused, and upon the grief of this suddenly died.
Master constable, let these men be bound, and\u00a0
brought to Leonato’s: I will go before and show\u00a0
him their examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Exit]\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Come, let them be opinioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Let them be in the hands\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrade. <\/strong>Off, coxcomb!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>God’s my life, where’s the sexton? let him write 
down the prince’s officer coxcomb. Come, bind them. 
Thou naughty varlet!2050<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conrade. <\/strong>Away! you are an ass, you are an ass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Dost thou not suspect my place? dost thou not\u00a0
suspect my years? O that he were here to write me\u00a0
down an ass! But, masters, remember that I am an\u00a0
ass; though it be not written down, yet forget not
that I am an ass. No, thou villain, thou art full of\u00a0
piety, as shall be proved upon thee by good witness.\u00a0
I am a wise fellow, and, which is more, an officer,\u00a0
and, which is more, a householder, and, is
more, as pretty a piece of flesh as any is in
Messina, and one that knows the law, go to; and a\u00a0
rich fellow enough, go to; and a fellow that hath\u00a0
had losses, and one that hath two gowns and every\u00a0
thing handsome about him. Bring him away. O that\u00a0
I had been writ down an ass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
