Dogberry. <\/strong>Marry, sir, I would have some confidence with you 
that decerns you nearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>Brief, I pray you; for you see it is a busy time with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Marry, this it is, sir.1585<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Yes, in truth it is, sir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>What is it, my good friends?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Goodman Verges, sir, speaks a little off the\u00a0
matter: an old man, sir, and his wits are not so\u00a0
blunt as, God help, I would desire they were; but,
in faith, honest as the skin between his brows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Yes, I thank God I am as honest as any man living 
that is an old man and no honester than I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Comparisons are odorous: palabras, neighbour Verges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato.\u00a0<\/strong>Neighbours, you are tedious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>It pleases your worship to say so, but we are the 
poor duke’s officers; but truly, for mine own part, 
if I were as tedious as a king, I could find it in 
my heart to bestow it all of your worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato.\u00a0<\/strong>All thy tediousness on me, ah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Yea, an ’twere a thousand pound more than ’tis; for 
I hear as good exclamation on your worship as of any 
man in the city; and though I be but a poor man, I 
am glad to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges.\u00a0<\/strong>And so am I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>I would fain know what you have to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>Marry, sir, our watch to-night, excepting your 
worship’s presence, ha’ ta’en a couple of as arrant 
knaves as any in Messina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>A good old man, sir; he will be talking: as they
say, when the age is in, the wit is out: God help\u00a0
us! it is a world to see. Well said, i’ faith,\u00a0
neighbour Verges: well, God’s a good man; an two men\u00a0
ride of a horse, one must ride behind. An honest\u00a0
soul, i’ faith, sir; by my troth he is, as ever
broke bread; but God is to be worshipped; all men\u00a0
are not alike; alas, good neighbour!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>Indeed, neighbour, he comes too short of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>Gifts that God gives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato.\u00a0<\/strong>I must leave you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>One word, sir: our watch, sir, have indeed 
comprehended two aspicious persons, and we would 
have them this morning examined before your worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato.\u00a0<\/strong>Take their examination yourself and bring it me: I\u00a0
am now in great haste, as it may appear unto you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry. <\/strong>It shall be suffigance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>Drink some wine ere you go: fare you well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Enter a Messenger]\n\n\n\n

Messenger.\u00a0<\/strong>My lord, they stay for you to give your daughter to\u00a0
her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato.\u00a0<\/strong>I’ll wait upon them: I am ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Exeunt LEONATO and Messenger]\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>Go, good partner, go, get you to Francis Seacole;\u00a0
bid him bring his pen and inkhorn to the gaol: we\u00a0
are now to examination these men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verges. <\/strong>And we must do it wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogberry.\u00a0<\/strong>We will spare for no wit, I warrant you; here’s\u00a0
that shall drive some of them to a non-come: only\u00a0
get the learned writer to set down our\u00a0
excommunication and meet me at the gaol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
