[Enter DON PEDRO, CLAUDIO, BENEDICK, and LEONATO]\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>I do but stay till your marriage be consummate, and\u00a0
then go I toward Arragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>I’ll bring you thither, my lord, if you’ll 
vouchsafe me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>Nay, that would be as great a soil in the new gloss\u00a0
of your marriage as to show a child his new coat\u00a0
and forbid him to wear it. I will only be bold
with Benedick for his company; for, from the crown\u00a0
of his head to the sole of his foot, he is all\u00a0
mirth: he hath twice or thrice cut Cupid’s\u00a0
bow-string and the little hangman dare not shoot at\u00a0
him; he hath a heart as sound as a bell and his
tongue is the clapper, for what his heart thinks his\u00a0
tongue speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedick. <\/strong>Gallants, I am not as I have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>So say I. methinks you are sadder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio.\u00a0<\/strong>I hope he be in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Hang him, truant! there’s no true drop of blood in 
him, to be truly touched with love: if he be sad, 
he wants money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedick. <\/strong>I have the toothache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>Draw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedick. <\/strong>Hang it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>You must hang it first, and draw it afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>What! sigh for the toothache?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>Where is but a humour or a worm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedick.\u00a0<\/strong>Well, every one can master a grief but he that has
it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>Yet say I, he is in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>There is no appearance of fancy in him, unless it be\u00a0
a fancy that he hath to strange disguises; as, to be\u00a0
a Dutchman today, a Frenchman to-morrow, or in the
shape of two countries at once, as, a German from\u00a0
the waist downward, all slops, and a Spaniard from\u00a0
the hip upward, no doublet. Unless he have a fancy\u00a0
to this foolery, as it appears he hath, he is no\u00a0
fool for fancy, as you would have it appear he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>If he be not in love with some woman, there is no 
believing old signs: a’ brushes his hat o’ 
mornings; what should that bode?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Hath any man seen him at the barber’s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio.\u00a0<\/strong>No, but the barber’s man hath been seen with him,
and the old ornament of his cheek hath already\u00a0
stuffed tennis-balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonato. <\/strong>Indeed, he looks younger than he did, by the loss of a beard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>Nay, a’ rubs himself with civet: can you smell him\u00a0
out by that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>That’s as much as to say, the sweet youth’s in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>The greatest note of it is his melancholy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>And when was he wont to wash his face?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>Yea, or to paint himself? for the which, I hear\u00a0
what they say of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>Nay, but his jesting spirit; which is now crept into 
a lute-string and now governed by stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Indeed, that tells a heavy tale for him: conclude, 
conclude he is in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio.\u00a0<\/strong>Nay, but I know who loves him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>That would I know too: I warrant, one that knows him not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>Yes, and his ill conditions; and, in despite of 
all, dies for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>She shall be buried with her face upwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benedick.\u00a0<\/strong>Yet is this no charm for the toothache. Old
signior, walk aside with me: I have studied eight\u00a0
or nine wise words to speak to you, which these\u00a0
hobby-horses must not hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Exeunt BENEDICK and LEONATO]\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro.\u00a0<\/strong>For my life, to break with him about Beatrice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>‘Tis even so. Hero and Margaret have by this 
played their parts with Beatrice; and then the two 
bears will not bite one another when they meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Enter DON JOHN]\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>My lord and brother, God save you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Good den, brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John. <\/strong>If your leisure served, I would speak with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>In private?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>If it please you: yet Count Claudio may hear; for\u00a0
what I would speak of concerns him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>What’s the matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John. <\/strong>[To CLAUDIO]<\/em> Means your lordship to be married 
to-morrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>You know he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>I know not that, when he knows what I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>If there be any impediment, I pray you discover it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>You may think I love you not: let that appear\u00a0
hereafter, and aim better at me by that I now will\u00a0
manifest. For my brother, I think he holds you\u00a0
well, and in dearness of heart hath holp to effect
your ensuing marriage;\u2014surely suit ill spent and\u00a0
labour ill bestowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Why, what’s the matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>I came hither to tell you; and, circumstances\u00a0
shortened, for she has been too long a talking of,
the lady is disloyal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>Who, Hero?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>Even she; Leonato’s Hero, your Hero, every man’s Hero:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>Disloyal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>The word is too good to paint out her wickedness; I
could say she were worse: think you of a worse\u00a0
title, and I will fit her to it. Wonder not till\u00a0
further warrant: go but with me to-night, you shall\u00a0
see her chamber-window entered, even the night\u00a0
before her wedding-day: if you love her then,
to-morrow wed her; but it would better fit your honour\u00a0
to change your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>May this be so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>I will not think it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>If you dare not trust that you see, confess not
that you know: if you will follow me, I will show\u00a0
you enough; and when you have seen more and heard\u00a0
more, proceed accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio.\u00a0<\/strong>If I see any thing to-night why I should not marry\u00a0
her to-morrow in the congregation, where I should
wed, there will I shame her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>And, as I wooed for thee to obtain her, I will join 
with thee to disgrace her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>I will disparage her no farther till you are my\u00a0
witnesses: bear it coldly but till midnight, and
let the issue show itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Pedro. <\/strong>O day untowardly turned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudio. <\/strong>O mischief strangely thwarting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don John.\u00a0<\/strong>O plague right well prevented! so will you say when\u00a0
you have seen the sequel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
